THE PERRY MASON STORY Part 3 (L.A. D.A. HAMILITON BURGER)

LET’S MEET, PERRY, DELLA, PAUL, Lt. TRAGG & D.A. BURGER.                                                                                                         Well here we go, let’s meet these 5 who made Courtroom Drama TV History. Lets start with Burger.  WILLIAM WHITNEY TALLMAN JR. Born 2/4/1915 in Detroit, Michigan. Died  8/30/1968 53 years old of lung cancer. He was married 3 times and had 5 kids. He like just about everyone on the show, he was a WW II Vet. He served in the US Army in the Pacific, and reached the rank of Major. His film work and TV appearances include. 1949 The Woman on Pier 13 he played Bailey. 1950 Armored Car Robbery he played Dave Purvis. 1953 the role that really established him as an actor, he played Emmett Myers the crazed killer in The Hitch-Hiker. 1957 Hell on Devils Island he played Bayard. On TV 1960 2 episodes of Have Gun Will Travel, the Sheriff in Long Way Home, George Jondill The Shooting of Jessie May. 1963 Gunsmoke Legends Don’t Sleep he played Race Fallon. Hamilton Burger first appeared in the 1935 novel The Case of the Counterfeit Eye, in chapter 10. Described as a totally different looking gentleman than what we get in the show, thank God for that. Handlebar mustache and glasses, among other descriptions of that time in the 30’s. Tallman read for the part and the rest was history. As you’ll find out as we move along, all of these actors worked and knew each other long before the show. He was who Gardner & Gail Patrick were both looking for. Burger’s bag of tricks was pretty much empty, mostly comprising expressions like What the Fuck, at everything Mason did. Once Mason had exposed the real murder, Burger  joined in Mason’s motion to dismiss the charges. Mason’s client goes about his day. Burger could then win one for sure. Burger did defeat Mason 2 times on the television series: “The Case of the Terrified Typist” Season 1 show 38, and “The Case of the Deadly Verdict” Season 7 show 4) Big time ratings episode that starts with Mason’s client being sentenced to the Gas Chamber. However Perry figures it out, and Burger had a drink. Most would say he sucks as a D.A., but his record against Mason, does lead to convictions and easy ones. Perry doesn’t always make it clear who it really was just to fuck with Burger. We find out who it was when we get back to Perry’s office at the Brent Building. We don’t see or hear about his record outside of Perry, it must be good cause many times both Paul & Lt. Tragg make reference that Burger’s goal is to be Governor of California. Mason and Burger have a crazy relationship. It borders on abuse and love, they highly respect each other, but don’t show it very often. We get that somber moment a couple times, and it’s usually it’s Mason saying, ” Come on Hamilton I’ll buy you a drink”. In one Perry invites Hamilton to sit-down and join he and Della for lunch. In which Perry orders for him telling the waitress, ” One order of Crow, he’ll eat it here”. The show does have a great dark humor about it. My favorite ” BURGER” episode is The Case of the Prudent Prosecutor Season 3 episode 14. Perry takes on the case of Jefferson Pike who is referred to him by none other than DA Hamilton Burger. Pike and Burger are old friends – Pike once saved his life – and the D.A. officially removes himself from anything to do with the case. This one gets deep into Hamilton’s past. We find out the he was injured very badly in a rafting accident while in British Columbia, Canada. Pike had to carry him in a raging storm, and he looses 3 toes while saving Burger’s life. Tender moments among the actors in this one. It ends with a classic line from Burgrer. ” You know, I think I won this one”.                                                                              Next in Part 4 we continue with Ray Collins, Lt. Arthur Tragg. Don’t forget about the 3rd Floor Podcast on Spotify and everywhere else you get your Podcast from.
